What You Can Do Right Now ♻️
Earth Day is this Tuesday, April 22nd, and it's the perfect time to reflect on our impact on the planet and make some positive changes. You don't have to overhaul your whole lifestyle to make a difference. Small, everyday changes can add up and create a significant positive impact.
Kick off your Earth Day with these simple, planet-friendly actions you can do today.
Ditch the Disposables
Bring Your Own: Carry a reusable water bottle, coffee cup, and shopping bag. It's a simple switch that drastically reduces single-use plastic waste.
Avoid Single-Use Plastics: Use containers instead of plastic wrap or bags. Cloth napkins are also a great alternative to paper ones. At the least, opt for paper over plastic: biodegradable options are best!
Conserve Energy
Unplug: When you're not using electronics, unplug them. Even when turned off, they can still draw power.
Switch to LEDs: Replace traditional light bulbs with energy-efficient LEDs. They last longer and use significantly less energy.
Adjust Your Thermostat: A few degrees can make a big difference. In the warmer months, raise the thermostat a bit, and in the colder months, lower it slightly.
Embrace Sustainable Transportation
Walk or Bike: The Pearl District is one of the country's most walkable neighborhoods, and Portland is generally amazing for biking! If you can, walk or bike instead of driving if you're not going far. It's good for your health and the environment.
Carpool or Use Public Transport: When driving is necessary, consider carpooling or using public transportation, like the Portland streetcar, to reduce emissions.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot!
Reduce: Be mindful of your consumption. Buy less, and choose products with minimal packaging.
Reuse: Find new uses for old items instead of throwing them away. Jars can become storage containers, and old clothes can be repurposed into cleaning rags. We have some great inspiration for holiday-themed reuse on our other blogs!
Recycle: Make sure you're recycling correctly. Check your local guidelines for what can and cannot be recycled.
Rot (Compost): Start composting food scraps and yard waste. It reduces landfill waste and creates nutrient-rich soil for your garden.

Green Your Space
Plant a Tree: If you have the space, planting a tree is a fantastic way to celebrate Earth Day and contribute to a healthier environment.
Start an Herb Garden: Growing herbs reduces your reliance on store-bought produce and packaging.
Bring the Outdoors In: Add some houseplants to your home. They improve air quality and add a touch of nature to your living space.
